MRE Preparation

June 28, 2017

One of the major fund raisers is the preparation of “Meals Ready to Eat” (MRE) project. Members of the Brazos Valley Marine Corps League (Detachment 1391) spent Tuesday, June27, 2017, creating the sauce that they then rubbed into the meat. Wednesday morning the smoking process began, with frequent intervals when a special bar-be-que sauce was lathered on the brisket. The smoking process continued through the night until each 10 lb. brisket was fully cooked. As the briskets finished cooking, they are cooled and then packaged in a vacuum sealed container for pickup by the purchaser on Friday. The money raised from the 32 briskets sold is used for acquisition of a Mameluke sword given to the top graduating Marine on his commissioning, as well as two scholarships to enlisted Marines and FMF Corpsmen pursuing a degree in the Brazos Valley.
Glenn Burnside is applying the special sauce on the brisket. Glenn is helped by Jim McClung (to his left), and Ed Holcomb, Tony Rogers (to his right), and Keith Stephens (behind). The briskets were cooked on bar-be-que pit provided by the American Legion Earl Graham Post #159 in Bryan, TX. In the picture, Ed Holcomb is holding a light in support of Glenn Burnside, who is testing the temperature of meets.
